He said:
The
morning of October 25, I was in my car driving westbound on I-20.
In the past, westbound on I-20 only meant I was heading for California.
West Texas has never been known for any bustling centers of culture,
or for that matter, humanity. But on this autumn morning I was westbound
for the only reason any guy would be: a girl.

It
was Homecoming weekend at ACU, the current academic home of my personal
Ticket Chick, Rachelle and I made the exodus to Abilene to see her.
While I looked forward to seeing the object of my affections, I must
say, I'm not really hip on small towns. Every time I go into one,
I hear the music from Deliverence. I guess I'm just funny that
way. Anyhow, I arrived at her dorm a little after 12:30. Just in time
to find she'd already gone to the stadium with the band. Armed with
her surprisingly accurate directions, I followed suit. |

There's
nothing like Saturday afternoon college football. The whole experience,
from the smell of hot dogs wafting through the crisp, Fall air to
the sounds of the bands and the fans to the great action on the
field, is great. As I settled in and watched the game between the
ACU Wildcats and the Tarelton State Whatevers, one thought kept
running through my head:
This
is nothing like Saturday afternoon college football.
I
know I shouldn't knock it. Heck, my college didn't even have
a football program (but they did kick the crap out of everyone in
wheelchair basketball). But this had to be one of the more wheels-off
football games I'd seen . . . not including any Cowboy's games I've
watched this year. Maybe I'm just too demanding a fan. Maybe, like
most guys, I think I'm smarter than the coaches and better than
the players. Maybe I'm just bitter for having to watch most of the
game from a hard, cold concrete step in 40 MPH wind gust . . . Someone
once told me you could get piles from that.
But
I digress . . .
The
long and short of it was ACU won 23-17. It was good to see a game
where one side didn't run up the score on the other. Of course,
neither team would've been able to.

The lovely ACU campus as seen from the top of the Ampitheatre.
