The Comets played a relentless game that saw us take a 3-2 lead into the final minutes of the game. Nonetheless, there was a gnawing in my gut that told me it wouldn't last.

With 4.3 seconds left on the clock, the Dress Blues tied the score on a fluke goal. The game would be decided by a shoot-out, a best of five penalty shot contest pitting the best shooters of each team against the other team's lone goalie.

In the time before the shoot-out, my defensemen would come up and apologize for letting them get the last goal.

I wish I could say it helped.

Things would start out pretty shaky as I would give up the first goal of the shoot-out to Gen-X Davey on a shot that must have lulled me to sleep. Our first shooter would have no luck against Followill.

I would face four more shooters that would include CCOI heroes Jeff Catlin, Mickey Spagnola and Cactus Pryor.

I would send them home empty handed. The Comets would win the shoot-out 2-1.

After the game, I did something I usually don't do: I went to the locker room with the rest of the team.

For once, I didn't have the weight of the loss hanging around my neck like a millstone.

For once, I smiled afterwards because now there were no more monsters.
