I thank the gods for the little things. Any girls I've dated before please show some maturity and refrain from making any comments. We should all be thankful for the little things. Little things we take for granted on a daily basis. Life seems to be one of the little things. I think most of us take for granted the fact we're alive in the first place. Health is another one of the little things for some. Our senses are yet another (though I think I could live without my vision and many have said already that I live with no sense of taste). There is one thing I hope I never take for granted; one thing that I don't think I could live without. Soul. It's more than just the technical ability of find that semi-qauver just on top of the beat that makes a tune swing. There's something special, god-given if you will, that gives you the ability to make something soulful, or in the extreme, funky. Sadly it's not something we all have. This was something I had reinforced not long ago. I was sitting on my own at a club listening to a band tear through some perfectly serviceable pop and rock covers. After several tunes they stopped for some of the typical banter and repartee that bands have with crowds. It was then they proudly announced they had come to our fair city from Abilene. I should've known. Granted, I have nothing against Abilene, but I'm sorry, nothing good comes out of Abilene. Let me correct that -- lots of good things come out of Abilene with no

intentions of returning. Nothing good comes out of Abilene that plans on going back to stay. But I digress . . .

Maybe if I hadn't known that I never would've noticed. Nah . . . Their next set featured more dance music and sad to say it was painfully obvious. These people had no soul. I hazard to guess that these people wouldn't know soul if it came up behind them and injected itself anally. I can sum it up in two words: lounge singers. That in itself is a shame because these were just kids. Maybe they can throw in the theme to "the Love Boat" in their next show? Before I left for the evening, I lifted a pint to a cocktail of deities and gave a silent "thank you." I've got
music.
